First, I will begin by sharing a bit of history of the Bulldog breed as we know it here in the U.S.
The bulldog was first imported here in the early 1900s and recognized by the AKC. The breeders in this time began to cross the TRUE bulldog with a Pug to change the standard and size of the new AKC ENG BULLDOG along with every other breed under AKC. By crossing the TRUE bulldog with a Pug they created a smaller version of the bulldog and produced skeletal defects. The spine was shortened in length which caused them to have c section births, spinal nerve and hip defects causing the new AKC standard bulldog to be crippled. They lost their nasal cavity by changing the head set to a small pug head leading to respiratory problems and choking. Most have respiratory problems such as pneomonia which results in death or very costly medical bills. Their trachea became defected and in most cases is the size of a straw not allowing enough oxygen to be pulled into the lungs which can lead to overheating or overexhaustion. If that wasnt bad enough they didnt import any new fresh blood they simply began INBREEDING and LINEBREEDING to clone this "NEW LOOK". By doing this they also set in stone all the health issues created by the crossing of the Bulldog and Pug. Keep in mind these 2 breeds are not related in any way.
Finally AKC made their first mistake. They accepted this standard and adopted it instead of keeping the true Enlish or European standards.
The reasoning behind those breeders doing this to these breeds is GREED and SELFISHNESS.
They began cloning and producing this look with no regard at all for the health issues that they just infused into the gene pool. Till this day those health issues have gotten worse.
But AKC and their followers have a "who cares" attitude.
Just as long as they look and move well in the showring and bring prizes and stud fees and priceless puppies.
Sad very sad.
